Our Mission

We are a community arts and heritage project, dedicated to uncovering and sharing the stories of the women and men who campaigned for the women's vote in and around Doncaster. This is their story.

Before 1918, most women were not able to vote, so across the country campaigners fought for change. Doncaster played an important part in the national Votes for Women movement, both as peaceful reformers and as militant activists.

Famous suffragettes such as the Pankhursts came here and addressed crowds of hundreds. Local women were also inspired to become suffragettes, as well as more peaceful suffragists. But 100 years later, their names and deeds are largely lost.

This website will explore, celebrate and share their forgotten stories. Take a look at the Stories section. It can be used as a resource by schools and local history groups, but is also a place where you can leave your thoughts and ideas.

“Deeds, not words.”

“Trust in God: She will provide.”
